I firmly believe in the American principle that one is innocent until proven guilty. However, the Herman Cain and Joe Paterno new stories this week got me thinking, "What is the most important thing a leader can do today to really inspire his/her followers?"
I recently helped an organization select an executive director. The unfortunate resignation of the previous directer created urgency to fill the position. This key position has major impact on their success and the fulfillment of their mission. With my guidance, the board president did a good job standardizing the hiring process, thinking through the job description, pre-planning interview questions and finding qualified candidates. The board agreed to use a validated and reliable assessment I recommend, the Profiles XT, to make sure the person they finally selected was a great "job fit."
We had several strong candidates. This took a lot of pressure off the president but he was tempted to skip the assessment and rely on the job interview and background checks. However, any experienced recruiter knows the problem with relying on your gut reaction to the interview is that candidates today are practiced and coached on how to interview and mistakes in selection are easily made. And background checks only screen people who have been caught committing serious infractions.
Reliable assessments help us see the person better, to see below the surface, providing answers to questions we need to know: Can the person do the job? How will they do the job? Do they want to do the job? Get the right person in the job and everyone will be happier, including the employee!
When you’re in a hole start…thinking. Think about what is important to you before you come back to the surface for air. As leaders we need to do some soul searching.
Chilean miner Esteban Rojas, 44, sent a note to his wife of 25 years while he was trapped, asking her to marry him again, but this time in a formal ceremony in the Catholic church -- something she had always wanted but that he had refused to do. He was the 18th miner rescued, and knelt to pray as soon as he emerged.
Yonni Barrios, 50, on the other hand, kissed his mistress, Susana Valenzuela, after becoming the 21st miner to reach the surface. While he was trapped underground, it was revealed that Barrios had both a wife and mistress. He asked both women to greet him but the wife refused.
Can you see how this relates to our personal and business relationships? Call me to discuss.
Who do you know that is in transition and might be thinking about starting a business? Someone who is unemployed, underemployed, entrepreneurial or could use some extra income?

My dad has had a message on his answering machine (yes, he still has a machine!) that ends with "Have a great day. It starts with your attitude."
Sometimes I get my head right by remembering my heroes and their words. Favorite quotes of mine include lines from the movie Jerry Maguire. Dickie Fox, Jerry's sales manager shows up six times in the movie, like a chorus in a greek play, and says things like, "Unless you love everyone, you can't sell anyone" and "Roll with the punches. Tomorrow's another day."

Dear leader, entrepreneur, student: be sure to relax, play & enjoy some recreation this weekend so you can bring your talents and gifts to us on Monday!
St. Thomas Aquinas taught me that recreation means to re-create. Recreation has a purpose, which includes restoring us so we can get back to our work, our mission, our reason for being here on this planet.
